Our Foundation
The quality of education in America has been declining for decades. Core subjects such as Civics, History, Literature, Philosophy, and Economics, once central to a well-rounded education, have been largely forgotten. Much of the division and polarization experienced today is the direct result of these declining educational standards. The Western Humanities Institute aims to address this gap by providing individuals with the tools and resources to better understand the foundational elements of Western thought, culture, and history.
The Western Humanities Institute accomplishes this goal through three main strategies: Teaching how to think, not what to think Promoting civility in discourse Enabling informed opinions through historical literacy
While history is filled with many cultures that have contributed positively to individuals, the Western Humanities Institute focuses specifically on advancing Western culture. It would be unwise to consider oneself educated while learning from only one source, therefore the Institute encourages individuals to study various other cultures and belief systems. Much good can come from studying many diverse sets of cultures and values. However, the Western Humanities Institute confidently asserts that: Western culture is more beneficial to humanity than any other culture The global spread of Western ideals has been a massive net good for humanity The preservation of western culture is essential to maintaining human flourishing
We believe that a strong understanding of history is a prerequisite for productive discourse. As indivuduals become well informed about the past, they are able to make reasoned descisions about the future. This orginization does not comment on contemporary political or social issues, we trust you to decide for yourself.
Society is built from the ground up, from families, to communities, to government. We need more informed citizens, more kind friends, and more bold leaders.
Our Strategies
Independent Thinking
Teaching how to think, not what to think. Our approach emphasizes critical analysis, logical reasoning, and the development of independent thought. Students learn to question assumptions, evaluate evidence, and form their own conclusions.
Civil Discourse
Promoting civility in discourse through understanding historical context, respecting different viewpoints, and engaging in constructive dialogue. We teach the art of respectful debate and thoughtful discussion.
Historical Literacy
Enabling informed opinions through historical literacy. By understanding the past, we can better comprehend the present and make wiser decisions for the future.
